It keeps the pace up of course but sometimes it would have been good to experience it in real time, so to speak. The only quibble I have is that much of what happens is told to us in retrospect. Also well conveyed is the mundanity of everyday tragedies that are not mundane at all to the people who suffer them. Yet Miles comes across as a skilful and dedicated cop who’s tough when she has to be - look for the great scene where she gives a bullying policeman short shrift. It’s noticeable that she’s aware of nuances between people - I can’t recall another crime writer who does this as well - reinforcing the idea that women are better readers of body language. She’s not only suffering the difficulties of late pregnancy, she regularly regularly faces down racism and sexism, as well as suggestions of nepotism because of her retired police hero father (whose life and marriage hold an interesting secret). His grief stricken mother believes his beautiful wife Gabby is somehow to blame. Half Sri Lankan detective Kate Miles is about to go on maternity leave and she’s hoping to wrap up a violent theft by teenagers from a local McDonalds when her senior officer dumps another task on her: an informal review of the finding that local footy hero Joel Marshall died accidentally in floods three months ago. How topical! Dinuka McKenzie’s debut is a very solid police procedural.
